Bad snack habit
Children with a pack-a-day crisp habit are consuming the equivalent of 5 litres of cooking oil a year, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) warns.
A typical 35g packet of crisps contains 2.5 teaspoons of oil. In a larger bag it rises to 3.5 teaspoons.
The BHF believes having a daily dose of such a high-fat, nutritionally poor product is a threat to children’s long-term health.
“Daily unhealthy snacking is a worrying habit,” said Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director of the charity.
“Rising rates of childhood obesity and cases of Type 2 diabetes paint a particularly grim picture for the future.”
